FLOSS minus the slop

submitted by

I’ve been a bit harsh at times regarding the Open Source software community, so let me gladly acknowledge one of the great positives:

You are guaranteed to be free of the slop machines…forever!

Think about it. They can never force you to use their slop machines as long as you are afforded the fundamental software freedom to inspect and modify the code you run on your own hardware.

You don’t get that same luxury with proprietary software and SaaS infrastructure. They can inject whatever they want and ultimately you have no say in the matter (other than to “vote with your wallet” and boycott).

That’s why, even though it’s upsetting when FLOSS projects like Firefox seem to be headed in the wrong direction, there’s always that blessed loophole: you, or someone on your behalf, can strip out all of the slop machines. No need to suffer through the Torment Nexus, because smashing it to bits is well within your power. They can never take your rights away from you.

@jaredwhite thank you for your Resistance. Greatly appreciated your tale of two cyberspaces.

I participated in a prospective design workshop this week and could not resist the urge to scream "every solution you think about already exist" ! Let's use them. I will blog about that someday soon (in french first).

I’m glad to hear it! (the first part, not the almost screaming part 😅🫠)
